The Legend of the Sweet Potato Pie
Yams are grown in Africa. Sweet potatoes are grown in the United States. Slaves called the softer, sweeter variety of sweet potatoes yams because they reminded them of the yams in Africa. The name stuck for the softer sweeter variety of sweet potato.
